Deriving its name from the Greek kanōn (rule of law), this king of Arab musical instruments, sometimes called the ‘Arabic psaltery’, was introduced by the Arabs in the 11th century into the Iberian Peninsula.
The qanun is a flat right-angled trapezoidal instrument, 75 to a 100 cm (30 to 40 in) long and 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24 in) wide. Its body is made of wood and the soundboard half of wood and half of usually fish skin.
To my knowledge, I am the only person today who owns and performs on such an instrument. Technically a qanun is a psaltery with a right angled trapezoidal shape and 26 sets of triple strings with a range of 3 octaves and a fifth, from G, an octave and a fourth below middle C, to D, 2 octaves and a second above middle C.
