The qanun is a descendent of the old Egyptian harp. It has played an integral part in Arabic music since the 10th century. The word qanun means 'law' in Arabic, and the word exists in English in the form of "canon."
Qanun (instrument) The name derives from the Arabic word qanun, meaning "rule, law, norm, principle", which is borrowed from the ancient Greek word and musical instrument κανών (rule), which in Latin was called canon (not to be confused with the European polyphonic musical style and composition technique known by the same name).
Ornamental sound holes called kafes are a critical component of what constitutes the accustomed timbre of qanun. However, they normally occupy different locations on the soundboard of Turkish kanuns compared to Arabic qanuns, and may also vary in shape, size and number depending on geography or personal taste.
The Qanun - An Arab Musical Instrument Par-Excellence. The pitch can easily be raised or lowered while playing by means of levers. In the modern classical Arab orchestras, usually consisting of the qanun, ‘ud (lute), kamanja (violin) and nay (flute), the qanun is the leading instrument – the orchestra’s takht (bed).
The qanun is a descendent of the old Egyptian harp. It has played an integral part in Arabic music since the 10th century. The word qanun means 'law' in Arabic, and the word exists in English in the form of "canon."
The strings of Arabic Qanun are plucked with the finger or with two plectra, one plectrum attached to the forefinger of each hand. A long bridge on the right-hand side of the Arabic Qanun rests on goat (or fish) skin covered windows in the top of the instrument;
The form of the qanun consists of a trapezoid-shaped flat board over which 81 strings are stretched in groups of three with 24 treble chords consisting of three chords to each note. The instrument is placed flat on the knees which means so close.
Quick modulation can also be achieved by using the fingernail of the left thumb to temporarily raise the tuning of some strings. In the history of Arabic music Qanun lays down the law of pitch for other instruments and singers.
