You can even check out badlands formations in the National Park Service like Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota and Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, or opt for ones on National Grasslands like Toadstool Geologic Park in Nebraska.
We recommend 3 days, which gives you time to explore all three driving loops, as well as tour downtown Rapid City. But if you only have 1 or 2 days, you can still make it work. Black Hills Loop: Approx 90 miles. Badlands National Park: Approx 95 miles between Rapid City and the Badlands National Park entrance (one way).
You may have heard the term “badlands” used before, but not in reference to our park. That’s because in addition to being a geographic term, describing Badlands National Park in South Dakota, this word is also a geologic term! The lowercase version of badlands is used to describe most terrains that look like the formations in our park.
As badlands, the 244,000-acre national park preserves a naturally excavated landscape revealing Earth's history. Rock layers that stacked up over about 75 million years began eroding a half-million years ago, sculpted into channels and canyons by the Cheyenne and White rivers.
Driving is one of the most popular ways to see the park, and routes such as the Badlands Loop Road (Highway 240) are well-marked. Park entry costs $30 per car ($15 if you enter by foot or by bike).
First things first: Badlands National Park sits in South Dakota, with the nearest city being Rapid City. Unless you fly into Rapid City Regional Airport, a trip to Badlands is essentially a road trip. There is plenty to see in the neighbouring lands, so enjoy it!

Winter, when temperatures can plunge to single digits, is much slower in terms of visitation and many side roads are closed, but fresh snow on the badlands may be one of the most remarkable sights of all.
