Caerlaverock Castle from the air. Caerlaverock Castle. Caerlaverock Castle (from "caer laverock", "lark castle") is a moated triangular castle first built in the 13th century. It is located on the southern coast of Scotland, 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) south of Dumfries, on the edge of the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve.
The siege of Caerlaverock in 1300 and the aftermath sets a great narrative for the app. It also offered a chance to introduce people to the domestic life of the castle and neighbouring Sweetheart Abbey. A wee bit of back story – in July 1300, the castle was besieged by the army of Edward I.
The history of the castle's builders can be traced to Undwin and his son Maccus in the 11th century; Maccus gave his name to the barony of Maccuswell, or Maxwell. His grandson, John de Maccuswell (d. 1241), was first Lord Maxwell of Caerlaverock.
Robert de Maxwell of Maxwell, Caerlaverock and Mearns (d. 1409) rebuilt Caerlaverock castle and was succeeded by Herbert Maxwell of Caerlaverock (d. 1420). The earliest mention of the lands of Caerlaverock is around 1160, when they were granted to the monks of Holm Cultram Abbey.
Caerlaverock castle and it’s garrison was one of the first to meet Edward’s wrath. Defence of the castle owned by Herbert Maxwell, who was not in residence at the time, fell to Robert de Cunningham, valet of the Steward of Scotland with a garrison of just 60 men.
It is located on the southern coast of Scotland, eleven kilometres (seven miles) south of Dumfries, on the edge of the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve. Caerlaverock was a stronghold of the Maxwell family from the 13th century until the 17th century, when the castle was abandoned.
Perhaps as few as 75 Scots defended the walls, outnumbered almost 50 to 1. A herald in Edward’s army recorded the events of the siege in a remarkable document called the Roll of Caerlaverock. It is one of the best original sources for a medieval siege in existence.
The earliest mention of the lands of Caerlaverock is around 1160, when they were granted to the monks of Holm Cultram Abbey. Around 1220 Alexander II of Scotland granted the lands to Sir John Maxwell, making him Warden of the West March.
