Pass a skills test in a vehicle class you intend to operate. A CDL skills exam must be taken at one of the authorized CDL driving skills exam sites. There you will demonstrate your knowledge and skills of operating a commercial motor vehicle.
You must be at least 18 years old. Have a valid driver's license (or learner permit) for the state in which you are applying. Pass the CDL written knowledge test. Complete your medical exam and get your physical.
After passing, be issued a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) Wait a minimum of 14 days before you can schedule your CDL road skills examination Pass a pre-trip inspection Pass the road skills and driving examination (you must bring your own vehicle)
FMCSA is yet to announce the intention to change the existing CDL requirements for 2021. The updated CDL requirements significantly affect the Entry-level Driver Training Rule, (EDLT) for drivers who are just starting in the trucking industry, the requirements for obtaining a CDL, the category of entry-level drivers that would benefit.
