Symptoms of southern corn leaf blight progress into long, oblong, tan or grayish lesions. Caused by the fungus Phyllachora maydis, tar spot was first confirmed in the United States in 2015 in Indiana and Illinois. Tar spot thrives in cool, wet and humid conditions with long periods of wetness.
