Ecological Marine Units (EMUs) are baseline 3D mapped ecosystems of the ocean that have been classified through statistical clustering. They are published in the peer-reviewed journal Oceanography.
EMUs greatly benefit the design of marine protected areas (MPAs). Their use is also valuable for scientific research and classroom instruction. The health of the ocean is fundamental to Earth’s survival, yet 95 percent of it remains a mystery.
A marine biologist may focus on behavioral relationships between the organisms in one particular species while someone studying ecology would study how the behavior of one organism influences another. An ecologist would also look at abiotic factors and how they influence that organism.

The Ecological Marine Units (EMU) are a clustering of the 3D volumetric regions of the world's oceans that help us better understand and, by association, conserve marine environments.
The Ecological Marine Units (EMU) are a clustering of the 3D volumetric regions of the world's oceans that help us better understand and, by association, conserve marine environments. In this lesson, you'll transform a subset of the global EMU point feature class dataset into a multidimensional NetCDF file.
Use an ArcGIS Notebook in ArcGIS Pro to create a NetCDF file of the world's Ecological Marine Units (EMU) dataset. Add the EMU NetCDF file as a multidimensional voxel layer in a local scene in ArcGIS Pro. Display EMU variables such as sea water temperature, salinity, or dissolved oxygen in a 3D voxel layer.
The Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) is a structured catalog of ecological terms that also provides a framework for interpreting, classifying, and inter-relating observational data from all types of sensors and platforms.
