This diet is designed to help people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and/or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) figure out which foods are problematic and which foods reduce symptoms. “The low FODMAP diet is a temporary eating plan that’s very restrictive,” says Johns Hopkins gastroenterologist Hazel Galon Veloso, M.D.
The diet involves reducing high FODMAP food for four to eight weeks and then re-introducing them using a specific protocol, if symptoms improve, to identify which ones are problematic for the person. Participants then follow a FODMAP modified diet, particular to their circumstances.
“The low FODMAP diet is a temporary eating plan that’s very restrictive,” says Johns Hopkins gastroenterologist Hazel Galon Veloso, M.D. “It’s always good to talk to your doctor before starting a new diet, but especially with the low FODMAP diet since it eliminates so many foods — it’s not a diet anyone should follow for long.
These sugars are found in a wide variety of foods in the diet, and not everyone with IBS will have symptoms with all of them. The diet involves reducing high FODMAP food for four to eight weeks and then re-introducing them using a specific protocol, if symptoms improve, to identify which ones are problematic for the person.
Using the app, you will be able to manage all three stages of the low FODMAP diet to create a dietary plan, search and scan barcodes to find low FODMAP suitable foods, improve your chances of successfully following the low FODMAP diet and then re-introducing foods to understand the ingredients that are triggering your symptoms.
Search: has an alphabetical list of foods indicating whether they are low or high FODMAP. Users can search by food name or food category. There is an Add an item feature that allows you to add an item yourself (which seems complicated) or send a request to the developers.
Dietary triggers are difficult to identify but research has shown that some carbohydrates (FODMAPs) may contribute to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Restricting FODMAP intake has been shown to improve IBS symptoms caused by food intolerance but this may not apply to everyone.
