Logs can be kept indoors, but are mostly placed outdoors in a shady spot where they will be kept moist. Log mushroom growing kits should produce more than a kilogram (two pounds) of mushrooms. What types of mushrooms can I grow in a log? Shiitake mushroom logs and oyster mushroom logs are the most common.
This is a (1) 12 in. Shiitake Log that will give you Shiitake Mushrooms for the new 2 plus years. Enjoy the distinctive flavor and texture of fresh-picked shiitake mushrooms. Each hand-cut hardwood log is inoculated with spores that will sprout organic shiitake mushrooms.
After harvesting the mushrooms, place the log back in its shaded location. After about six weeks, the log should fruit again. One log can produce up to two pounds of mushrooms over its six-year lifespan.
Mushroom growing kits should be removed from packaging as soon as possible, or they go mouldy. Mushroom logs can be kept indoors given the right light and temperature conditions. Many mushroom log sellers offer a ‘guarantee to produce’ – check for this when purchasing your mushroom log.
Using a 5/16-inch drill bit, drill holes two inches deep along the log. The holes should be spaced four to five inches apart. Four or five rows will be needed per log. Hammer plugs into holes, then set one-quarter of an inch below the bark with a punch. Melt cheese wax into each hole to protect the plugs.
Logs are inoculated with mushroom spawn. This means that wooden plugs covered with mycelium have been injected into the log, and then covered over with a wax seal to prevent drying out as the mycelium grows into the log.
Start Your Own Shiitake Mushroom Logs. Shiitake mushrooms are supposed to be one of the easiest mushrooms to cultivate. Partly because you don't have to deal with soils and substrates and partly because inoculating logs with just one type allows you to better recognize and identify the shiitakes.
The size of the drill bit needed will also depend on the size of inoculated dowels you order, but 5/16" is a typical size. There are several companies online that you can order mushroom plugs from and a simple Google search will help you find those various companies as well as reviews of their products.
