As you are rocking back and forth, feel where the weight rests in your hands. When you rock back, it sits more in the heel of your hands. When you rock forward, you’ll feel it in your knuckles and fingertips. Where do we want it in the handstand?
For any handstand exercise, there is going to be a significant amount of stress on the hands and wrists. So, it’s important you stretch and warm things up. Here is a video from our NF Handstands course going over some of our favorite wrist stretches to prepare to get upside-down.
Specific Strength – Start training the strength you need to go upside down. Flexibility – Improve your flexibility for standing on your hands. Alignment – Master the perfect line. Falling – Overcome your fear by learning to turn out from hand stands. Balance – Learn the proper way to hand balance.
If someone focuses on balance BEFORE they have a straight line, then yes, they are likely to be able to ‘stay in a handstand’ sooner than someone who focuses on their alignment BEFORE balance. And if ‘staying in a handstand’ is the height of their handstand dreams, then maybe that’s the way they should go…
With excellent alignment, your handstand is easier to balance and takes less energy so you can hold it for longer. This doesn’t mean you should NEVER practise holding before having good alignment but having good alignment will make a HUGE impact on you balancing. In our experience…
