It is designed for bell ringers to practise ringing and calling, either at home or in a tower, and includes the natural sound of church bells and hand bells, interactive animation, input from external sensors, and a wide choice of display/input practice modes.
Ringing simulators are used by learners and advanced ringers. At home and in the tower, learners use them to practise call changes, plain hunt, and basic methods; advanced ringers use them to practise for peals and public demonstrations of ringing, right up to the level of Bristol Surprise 16 and 100-spliced minor.
Mobel lets you practise any method on 4 to 16 bells, ringing a single bell or, for handbell ringers, a pair. You can ring plain courses, or touches with bobs and/or singles that Mobel calls, or spliced.
Abel, Mabel and Mobel are the latest in a line of bellringing simulator programs starting with one running under DOS, back in 1993. Versions of Abel are available for Windows 95 onwards; the latest version of Abel runs on Windows XP (SP3)/Vista/7/8/8.1/10. Mabel runs on any version of Mac OS X from 10.4 (Tiger) onwards.
At home and in the tower, learners use them to practise call changes, plain hunt, and basic methods; advanced ringers use them to practise for peals and public demonstrations of ringing, right up to the level of Bristol Surprise 16 and 100-spliced minor. Towers also use Abel for "silent practice" sessions.
Simulators for bell ringers have been around since the 1970s. The late Peter Cummins, built one and used it to develop his own ringing, and also to teach others. His early simulators(some of which are preserved in the Bellfoundry museum) used discrete electronic logic but modern simulators use software running on a general purpose computer.
Mobel for Android phones and tablets is now available from the Google Play store. Search for Mobel AbelSim, or go to this address . It is extremely similar to the popular Mobel for iPhone/iPad, and costs the same (£5.99 in the UK). It will run on any version of Android from 5.0 (Lollipop) onward.
