Frequently Asked Questions

  • How are students involved in the simulation process?

Active Student Participation: Effective learning comes through simulations when students are actively engaged. Students should predict and explain the outcome they expect the simulation to generate. Every effort should be made to make it difficult for students to become passive during the simulation.

  • How are simulations used in family life education?

In family life education, they have been used to illustrate divorced and remarried families (Crosbie-Burnett & Eisen, 1992) and interactions between partners (Osmond, 1979). Social science courses studying institutions and individuals have simulated life in mental hospitals (Claiborn & Lemberg, 1974), and in prison (Haney, Banks, & Zimbardo, 1973).

  • Do you need special training to use simulation?

In the past, simulation required the specialized training of programmers and analysts dedicated to very large and complex projects. Now, due to the large number of software available, simulation at times is used inappropriately by individuals lacking the sufficient training and experience.

  • How are simulations used in the business world?

In business-related classes, simulations have been used to model international trade (Truscott, Rustogi, &Young, 2000) and the development of business enterprises (Goosen, Jensen, & Wells, 2001).

  • How is the production of dimethyl ether done?

In order to reach that production rate methanol should be fed at a rate of 280,000 tons per year. The DME production process is done by indirect method that includes only methanol dehydration and that reaction is known to be catalytic therefore process is done by presence of γ-Al2O3 catalyst in adiabatic reactor.

  • How does the synthesis of DME take place?

The synthesis of DME occurs in presence of different commercial solid catalysts such as γ-Al2O3 in liquid or gas phase. Moreover, DME production considers either direct or indirect method (ibid.).

  • How is methanol removed from the second distillation column?

In the second distillation column methanol is removed from water and returns back at a recycle at rate of 566.7 kmol/hr, while water is drown out from process at rate of 550 kmol/hr. Aspen Plus software will be used for designing the reactor, heater and two distillation columns.
