In general, the income limit for SSI is the federal benefit rate (FBR), which is $794 per month for an individual and $1,191 per month for a couple in 2021. Remember, though, that not all income is countable, and so you can earn more than $794 per month and still qualify for SSI (more on this below).
While a disabled (nonblind) person applying for or receiving SSDI cannot earn more than $1,180 per month by working, a person collecting SSDI can have any amount of income from investments, interest, or a spouse's income.
Calling Social Security is another way to check on your Disability claim status. Who you should call depends on where you are in the Disability process. You can call the main, toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 (or TTY 1-800-325-0778). The office is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.
Contact your local SSA office in person or in writing. You can get the address of your local SSA office by plugging in your zip code at the Office Locator link or by calling 800‐772‐1213 (TTY 800‐325‐0778). Write to the national office of the SSA.
The simplest answer is yes: Social Security income is generally taxable at the federal level, though whether or not you have to pay taxes on your Social Security benefitsdepends on your income level.
