Use any one of the following methods to report earnings if you receive SSI: Call 1-800-772-1213. Call, visit, or write to your local Social Security office. Access the SSA's toll-free, automated wage reporting telephone system. Access the SSA's mobile wage reporting application. Go online to mySocialSecurity.
It is not based on how severe your disability is or how much income you have. Most SSDI recipients receive between $800 and $1,800 per month (the average for 2021 is $1,277). However, if you are receiving disability payments from other sources, as discussed below, your payment may be reduced.
People who get SSI must report all of their income to the Social Security Administration when they get their income. It is best to report income either in person at a local Social Security office, or in writing by mailing a letter, along with copies of your pay stubs, to Social Security.
The amount of money you make, called your income, includes not just cash, but items that can be used as -- or used to obtain -- food, clothing, or shelter. Specifically, the SSA counts the following as income. Money you earn as a result of performing work (this is called "earned" income because you have to do something to earn it).
