When expressions like you and I act as the object of a verb or a preposition, the subject form I should change into the object form me. Since you has the same form in nominative and objective case, it doesn’t undergo any transformation. It is a present from my husband and me. (NOT It is a present from my husband and I.)
''I'' is a subjective pronoun, while ''me'' is an objective pronoun. What does that mean? Well, most sentences have two different types of nouns: a subject and an object. The subject of the sentence is the noun doing the action, while the object is the noun toward which the subject is directing the action. Take a look at this sentence:
Anything that is the object (complement) of "between" or any other preposition is not the subject of a verb. So "between you and me" is always correct and "between you and I" is never correct. Simple. OK, time for the linguist to take over: If it's so simple, why do so many people have so much trouble getting it right?
Some native speakers will tell you so, but not only does no such rule exist, but using “you and I” instead of “you and me” is plain wrong in many situations. The rule is quite simple, actually.
Me is an object pronoun, and the object is the person or thing the action happens to as in "Alex liked me." Use you and I when it is the subject of the sentence; use you and me when it is the object of the sentence. Here are some example sentences with you and I as the subject, doing the action: You and I are going to be late.
The difference between I and me Both I and me are 1st person singular pronouns, which means that they are used by one person to refer to himself or herself. I is the subject pronoun, used for the one "doing" the verb, as in these examples: I am studying for a Russian test.
Use the pronoun "I" when the person speaking is doing the action, either alone or with someone else. Use the pronoun "me" when the person speaking is receiving the action of the verb in some way, either directly or indirectly.
Both I and me are 1st person singular pronouns, which means that they are used by one person to refer to himself or herself. I is the subject pronoun, used for the one "doing" the verb, as in these examples: I am studying for a Russian test. (I is the subject of am studying.)
