pH of acids and bases: The pH of a solution varies from 0 to 14. Solutions having a value of pH ranging 0 to 7 on pH scale are termed as acidic and for the value of pH ranging 7 to 14 on pH scale are known as basic solutions. Solutions having the value of pH equal to 7 on pH scale are known as neutral solutions.
What is pH? pH Definition. pH is defined as the negative logarithm of H + ion concentration. Hence the meaning of the name pH is justified as the power of hydrogen. We know that all the acids and bases do not react with the same chemical compound at the same rate. Some react very vigorously, some moderately while others show no reaction.

Because the base "soaks up" hydrogen ions, the result is a solution with more hydroxide ions than hydrogen ions. This kind of solution is alkaline. Acidity and alkalinity are measured with a logarithmic scale called pH.
Common strong acids are sulfuric acid, nitric acid and hydrochloric acid; common strong bases are sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. Strong acids and bases corrode materials more quickly due to the larger number of ions available for the reaction.
Household bases. Some household items that contain acids include: yogurt, vinegar, lemon juice, citric acid, apples, jelly, pineapples, cranberry sauce, milk, and batteries. Other items around the house that contain bases consist of Ammonia, drain cleaner, baking soda, chalk, toothpaste, Windex, bleach, laundry detergent, shampoo, and egg whites.
Mixing acids and bases can cancel out or neutralize their extreme effects. A substance that is neither acidic nor basic is neutral. The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral. A pH less than 7 is acidic.
