Using A Tuner: Tuning with a tuner is the easiest and most accurate way to tune your cello. Make sure it’s set to 440 htz and then listen to A and tune A, listen to D and tune D, etc.
The Basics. The cello has four strings which are tuned in perfect fifths, similar to the violin. The notes are: C, G, D, and A, in ascending order of thickness. The low C on the cello corresponds to two octaves below middle C on the piano, and many students use a piano to tune their cellos.
From the top down, normal cello tuning is A (below middle-C), D, G, C (2 octaves below middle-C). There are a number of instances calling for scordatura tuning, in which one or more strings is given alternate tuning.

You can tune a bass guitar like a cello but there's really no point, since they're relatively easy to play and the advantages to tuning in fifths isn't really an issue on bass guitar. Bass guitars are also cheap, so you could pick one up without much monetary outlay and plink around to see if you like it.
The 4 strings of the cello are tuned in tonally descending order: a (two keys left of middle c on the piano), d, g, and c. The c string is two octaves below middle c. The a string is the smallest in diameter, and the c string is the largest in diameter. It is vital that the cello be tuned well at the beginning of each practice session.
