To reset a GFCI outlet, look carefully at the two little buttons on the front of the outlet. Press the one that says RESET. Usually, the RESET button is red, while the TEST button is black.
Follow the photos below, to look for and repair loose connections. GFCI (short for "ground fault circuit interrupter") outlets, those unusual outlets with the test and reset buttons, are required in areas of the house where shock hazards are greatest.
Test and reset every GFCI you find. If the GFCI won't reset or the button doesn't pop out when you press the "test" button, there may be no power to the GFCI or you may have a bad GFCI. Pro tip: If the "reset" button trips again every time you press it, there may be a dangerous current leak somewhere on the circuit.
If the indicator light does not go out and come back on, or if the GFCI cannot be reset, it must be replaced. Safety Tip: Don’t use a GFCI outlet as a receptacle for a refrigerator or a freezer, as it could trip without your knowledge.
