  • 1. How it Works 1. How it Works HEAP helps low-income households meet the cost of heating their homes. The benefit can pay for fuel, your utility source, and heating equipment replacement and repairs. The benefit is paid either directly to the heating vendor or utility company. The HEAP benefit opened October 1, 2021. Apply by March 15, 2022. If accepted, you will get HEAP benefits for the current season. You will have to apply for HEAP every year when the program is open. You may be able to get HEAP even if your heat is included in your rent. You may also be eligible for the Regular Arrears Supplement. This is a one-time benefit that pays up to $10,000 for late electric or gas bills. This is available until September 30, 2022. Apply for HEAP to be considered for this benefit. An Emergency HEAP benefit is available if your heat was turned off or if you are out of fuel. The emergency benefit opened January 3, 2022. You can apply up until March 15, 2022 or when funds run out. Other benefits are available that can help you: pay for gas and/or electricity utility arrears. repair or replace your furnace, boiler and other direct heating equipment, if you’re a homeowner. receive energy efficiency services like heating equipment cleaning.
