AMDF supports research on age-related macular degeneration symptoms, causes, and treatment. The biggest risk factor for Macular Degeneration is age. Your risk increases as you age, and the disease is most likely to occur in those 55 and older. Genetics – People with a family history of AMD are at a higher risk.
People with very advanced macular degeneration are considered legally blind. Even so, because the rest of the retina is still working, they retain their peripheral vision, which is not as clear as central vision.
Early signs of macular degeneration usually present with a slow, progressive and a painless vision loss. In very rare cases, the loss of vision might be sudden. One can see shadowy, dark areas in the center of the vision. The vision can also be fuzzy or distorted very unusually.
Like fluorescein angiography, this test uses an injected dye. It may be used to confirm the findings of a fluorescein angiography or to identify specific types of macular degeneration. Optical coherence tomography. This noninvasive imaging test displays detailed cross-sectional images of the retina.
