The series of missions are known as Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA), which will see three one-year Mars surface simulations based at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
That means you will have to spend 3-4 months at Mars before you can begin your return trip. All in all, your trip to Mars would take about 21 months: 9 months to get there, 3 months there, and 9 months to get back.
This mission class requires a large amount of energy to be expended in transit, even after taking advantage of either a Venus swingby (on either the inbound or outbound leg) or a deep space propulsive maneuver in order to limit Mars and Earth entry speeds. There are three distinguishing features of this mission profile.
Each mission will consist of four crew members who will live in Mars Dune Alpha, an isolated 1,700 square foot habitat. The mission will consist of rigorous training and problem solving exercises, including simulated spacewalks.
