The Board of Nursing does not define the organizational processes for credentialing and privileging. Since the NP is a licensed, independent practitioner in Oregon, the Nurse Practice Act does not prohibit NPs from making decisions about the need for a client to be admitted for a particular type of care.
Join the Nurse Practitioners of Oregon and add your voice to the growing movement of Oregon’s nurse practitioners!
But, Oregon law requires that individuals in healthcare professions also identify their license type. An introduction to a client might be: “Hello, I am Dr. Jones, a Family Nurse Practitioner."
A: No. NPs are licensed independent practitioners (LIPs) in Oregon and do not function under an agreement with a physician. Recognition as a LIP means that the NP is accountable for their own diagnostic/treatment decisions.
Nurse practitioners are registered nurses who have obtained at least bachelor’s and a master’s degree. For starters, every prospective practitioner will need to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited nursing school.
To become an LPN in Oregon you will need to: Attend an approved practical nursing program in the United States. Complete an application form for licensure. You can get one here. Request that your nursing school send a set of official transcripts to the Oregon State Board of Nursing. Register for the NCLEX exam here. The exam fee is $200.
Nurse practitioners need to have compassion, leadership skills, self-confidence and analytical skills; excellent communication abilities and interpersonal skills are also essential. Must have decision-making and problem-solving skills, and possess a base knowledge of math and science.
Nurse practitioners diagnose, monitor, and treat an array of injuries and illnesses. Generally, nurse practitioners work with doctors, but in some states they administer tests, care for patients, and prescribe medication with minimal supervision.
