  • How is a repo transaction different from a securities lending transaction?

    However, the mechanics of a repo transaction are different from those of a securities lending transaction. Also, a repo agreement is usually governed by a different contractual agreement than a securities lending transaction, which is called a Global Master Repurchase Agreement ( GMRA ).

    A repurchase agreement (repo) is a form of short-term borrowing for dealers in government securities. In the case of a repo, a dealer sells government securities to investors, usually on an overnight basis, and buys them back the following day.

  • Are Repos collateralized loans?

    Despite the similarities to collateralized loans, repos are actual purchases. However, since the buyer only has temporary ownership of the security, these agreements are often treated as loans for tax and accounting purposes. In the case of bankruptcy, in most cases repo investors can sell their collateral.
